China / Taiwan relations -- Chen Shui-bian perspective

Can you believe the news that Taiwanese ex-president Chen Shui-bian expected to be arrested over allegations that he used money from a special presidential fund! Ever since the new president was put into office, (Ma Ying-jeo) there have been growing political attacks on Chen.
During Chen's office, there was good economic growth and the dialogue between China & Taiwan was good at best. What stopped the ex-president from fully declaring Taiwan an independent country was a military invasion from Mainland China. China doesn't even hide the fact that they would attack if they declared Independence! It was even told on state news (from my own sources) that if Taiwan would not cede their "rogue status" they would reclaim the Island by 2020. We all know that would never happen because of the economic sanctions that almost every country would put on them. Moreover, the U.S. would never allow them to pass the Taiwan Strait without any military repercussions from their battle cruisers that are stationed in the Pacific region.
Chen is a strong advocate for Taiwanese Independence and he was never afraid to say so. During his time as president, he often defended the people first before putting his political career in the spot light. Is it not convenient to put someone else in trouble while the other tries to shine in an adversaries eyes! That is what Ma Ying-jeo is trying to do by making Chen look bad in the media and to please China. All know the reasons why he does so, but his thought is to bring Taiwan & China closer in economic relations than Chen did. The people know that if China gets too close and Taiwan gives liberty for closer ties such as: tourism and Chinese investment in Taiwanese companies; they will eventually be stuck with their bitter rival or consumed by them.
I'll be posting many things on China in the coming days, so I hope you enjoy the reads!
